Tehran echoed with tolls of "Allah-o-akbar" last night as Iranians expressed their protest to the increasing pressures on the opposition leaders, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi.

Anti-government websites report that after months of silence, last night people of Tehran shouted out their protest against the growing government pressure on the leader of the Green Movement.

Shouting out "Allah-o-akbar" (God is great!) was one of the main forms of protest used by Iranians during the time of the 1979 Revolution which ousted the monarchy and finally led to the establishment of the Islamic Republic.

The echoes of "Allah-o-akbar" were once more heard last summer in Tehran at the height of the protests against the 2009 re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad which protesters claim was fraudulent.

Five days ago, five major opposition websites issued a call inviting people to chant "Allah-o-akbar" in protest to the government's increasing pressures. University students also announced their support of this action.

The call condemned the "efforts of the government to isolate the leaders of the Green Movement, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi" and added that "the government is testing the waters to see what the reaction of the people will be."

In recent weeks, home of Mehdi Karroubi was attacked five nights in a row by the notorious plain clothes forces in Tehran, while Mir Hossein Mousavi's office was raided and people were barred from meeting with the opposition leader.

The websites wrote that the "silence of the Green Movement is due to its peaceful nature", but added: "This peacefulness is not capitulation; there are red lines that cannot be crossed and one of those is the arrest of these honest and vanguard friends of the movement."

The call invited people to engage in "Allah-o-akbar" chants on Monday night between 10 and 11 pm and if necessary to continue doing so the following nights.

The reformist websites report that the people responded to the call with echoes of protest from all directions of Tehran last night.

Rooz website reports that security forces even entered certain apartment complexes blowing their whistles in order to stop people from chanting.

In the meantime, Islamic Republic hardliners have been calling for the prosecution of the opposition leaders more vociferously in the past days after Mehdi Karroubi wrote a critical letter to the Chairman of the Assembly of Experts calling for the re-evaluation of Ayatollah Khamenei as the supreme leader.
