"Situation of Iranian political prisoners may improve with new orders from Leader"

Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani informed families of Iranian political prisoners that the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has issued an order to review the situation of political detainees in Iranian prisons.

In his personal website, the Chairman of the Expediency Council wrote: "The leader has issued appropriate orders with regards to adherence to the law, speeding up legal procedures and observing the legal rights of the prisoners and these orders can solve many of the current problems."

Ayatollah Rafsanjani's website reports that the families of political prisoners called for fair legal procedures, observance of prisoners' rights in prisons and investigation of officials involved in holding trials in the post-election events.

Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani told the families that he is not certain if relaying the messages to the officials would be effective and maintained that it may even have an adverse effect.

"However, I am following up on your demands with the Supreme Leader and I am very hopeful that it will yield results," he added.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani, who has cautiously sided with the disputers of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's victory in the 2009 presidential elections, has consistently maintained that the post-election issues can only be resolved by the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani has called for the release of political prisoners and compensation of the victims of government violence in the post-election crackdown on protesters, but the Supreme Leader has so far rebuked the moderate cleric for his support of the opposition.

Ayatollah Khamenei has sided with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in these disputes which have heavily fractured the Islamic Republic establishment.

The opposition claims that the Revolutionary Guards were involved in engineering the result of the elections but their demand for a recount or renewed elections has been denied by the leadership.
