Iran has expelled three Kuwaiti diplomats in retaliation for the
expulsion of three Iranian diplomats accused of spying in the emirate.
Iranian media announced the move Sunday. Iran's state run Press TV said the three Iranians were expelled by Kuwait on April 2.
Last month, Kuwait's foreign minister announced that several Iranian diplomats would be expelled for having links to a spy ring operating in the country.
The alleged spies, who included Kuwaitis and Iranian nationals, were suspected of carrying out espionage work on behalf of Iran. Media reports said they had been gathering information about Kuwaiti and U.S. military sites.
A Kuwaiti court in March handed down death sentences for one Kuwaiti and two Iranians.
Iran has denied the spying charges.
