A new domestically manufactured solar-powered car named the Ghazal 2 was
unveiled at the University of Tehran on Sunday. The new car is an enhanced model
of the Ghazal 1, which was previously designed by students of the University of
Tehran.
Compared with its predecessor, the Ghazal 2 is lighter, speedier, and more
powerful.
The five-meter-long vehicle weighs 150 kilograms, is fitted with enhanced solar
cells, and can reach a maximum speed of 150 kilometers per hour.
The aerodynamic body of the Ghazal 2 is made of carbon fiber.
On sunny days, it can travel 600 kilometers with an average speed of 75
kilometers per hour.
The supervisor of the Ghazal 2 research team, Karen Abrinia, has asked the
government to provide financial support to enable the team to take part in the
2011 World Solar Challenge in Australia in October.
Earlier this week, students from the University of Qazvin unveiled another
domestically designed solar-powered car named the Havin.
The Havin is five meters long and two meters wide and is capable of reaching a
maximum speed of 130 kilometers per hour.
The vehicle weighs 160 kilograms and is fitted with six square meters of silicon
solar cells.
