"The Outcasts 3" to go on sale in Cannes Film Market

The distributor of the controversial Iranian film "The Outcasts 3" said that the political comedy will be offered at the Cannes Film Market, which will be held from May 11 to 20.

"We will attend the event as a private sector institute and this will serve as a training exercise for us," Filmiran director Ali Sartipi told the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency on Saturday.

Most of the productions offered by Iran at the Cannes Film Market over the past few years were art films, Sartipi said.

The Filmiran plans to introduce films in other genres from Iran's ordinary cinema to the world, he added.

"The Outcasts 3" mocks the rivals of Ahmadinejad in the disputed 2009 election

"The Outcasts 3", mocking the rivals of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the disputed 2009 election, premiered in Iranian movie theaters in March. The film's subject provoked an opposition call for boycotting the film on certain Internet websites.

According to certain official new agencies and institutes, the film has earned over 40 billion rials (about $4.2 million).

However, opposition websites have expressed doubts over the tally. They say that news agencies published fake reports on "The Outcasts 3" box office receipts in order to show that efforts to boycott the film have proved futile.

In early April, "The Outcasts 3" director Masud Dehnamki announced that the film, currently on screen in the Iranian movie theaters, has been pirated.

He said that a very low quality copy of the film has been put on the Balatarin website by "so-called intellectuals".

"We are the winners whether people watch 'The Outcasts' in cinemas or in their homes," Dehnamaki said.

However, he expressed hope that people would prefer to watch the film in movie theaters.

Dehnamaki recently announced that he plans to make another sequel to "The Outcasts". He said that the story of the sequel will be more interesting.
