Iran basketball team on Saturday was beaten by the Philippines in its opening game of the 2011 William Jones Cup tournament. The Philippines, headed by former Iran team coach Rajko Toroman, beat Iran 73-59 in New Taipei City.
Iran, which has won back-to-back titles, will face Japan at the Sinjhuang Stadium on Sunday.
Jordan beat the UAE 91-72 and South Korea outclassed Malaysia 110-50 in the other matches.
A total of eight teams are participating in the single round robin format to determine the winner.
Iran took part in the tournament with its key players such as Memphis Grizzlies center Hamed Haddadi and Samad Nikkhah Bahrami.
The Asian powerhouse is gearing up for the FIBA Asia Championship scheduled to be held in Wuhan, China from September 15 to 25 where the winning finalist goes to the Olympics next year.
