Photos: The Blind Kilim Weaver of Meybod

Photos by Massoud Saki, Mehr News Agency

Gholamreza Sabbaghi is a 68-year-old blind man who lives in Meybod, central Iran. Sabbaghi, who lost his sight when he was 5 years old, has been weaving kilims for 56 years now, without any support from official sources. He lives with his wife in a beautiful old house in the town of Meybod.

Kilims are flat tapestry-woven carpets or rugs produced from the Balkans to Pakistan, including in Iran. Kilims can be purely decorative or can function as prayer rugs. Recently-made kilims are popular floor-coverings in Western households.
