IAAB is pleased to present Camp Ayandeh 2012, its celebrated annual Iranian American high school leadership camp, which is being held July 3rd-11th at Whittier College in Los Angeles, California. Camp Ayandeh is open to rising high school students through incoming college freshmen.
Camp Ayandeh first began in 2006 with its inaugural class and has grown every subsequent year to include a record number of campers, counselors and staff in 2011, becoming what many refer to as “the highlight of the summer.”
Camp Ayandeh, through a positive and inclusive environment, allows campers from across the country to develop leadership skills, foster strong friendships, and gain a deeper understanding of culture and identity as youth within the Iranian Diaspora. Camp Ayandeh accomplishes this mission through community-building activities, cultural, historical and artistic workshops, and critical discussions, assisting campers in responding to the issues affecting young people within the Iranian American community.
Campers and counselors alike leave with a stronger sense of self and responsibility for others, lifelong friendships, and the necessary skills to lead both within and outside of the Iranian diaspora community. The Iranian diaspora community is diverse and vibrant, a characteristic that Camp Ayandeh represents, embraces, and celebrates.
Though all activities are conducted in English and no prior knowledge of the Persian language is required, the camp's cultural activities include lessons on and exposure to Iranian language, music, poetry, films, and history. As a non-political and non-religious camp, Camp Ayandeh is open to all races and all creeds. Through the guidance of Iranian American camp counselors drawn from an array of American universities, Ayandeh campers are also encouraged to reflect on what it means to be Iranian American with peers who serve as role models and identify with the realities of Iranian American teenage life.
