Iran's Intelligence Ministry has announced the arrest of "an American Central Intelligence Agency spy of Iranian origin." The ministry announcement indicates that the suspect had been under surveillance in Afghanistan and was arrested after he entered Iran.

The announcement claims that the detainee has a history of activity in U.S. military intelligence units as well as U.S. military bases in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Iran contends that the suspect was planning to feed "false information" to Iranian intelligence to create spying channels. According to the ministry announcement, the suspect was identified as soon as he entered Bagram Base in Afghanistan. Upon entering Iran, he was followed for a time and arrested as he was about to begin his "spying missions."

Bagram Air Field, outside Kabul, is the main base for American and other international forces.

The news of the arrest comes only a week after Iran announced the capture of an unmanned U.S. drone that had entered Iranian airspace from Afghanistan.

The drone reportedly was captured with minimal damage, and U.S. President Barack Obama has called on Iran to return it to the United States.

Iran has so far rejected the request.
