Rafsanjani Is For Boycotting Iran's Parliamentary Elections: Report

According to a report by Mehr News Agency, Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Chairman of the Expediency Council, is of the opinion that the reformists should not participate in the March 2012 Parliamentary elections. The opinion was expressed by political analyst Sadeq Zibakalam.

According to Zibakalam, Rafsanjani's is against participating in the election due to the fact that none of the demands he made in his last Friday Prayers sermon in July 2009 have been met. In that sermon which was in the height of the unrest after the June 2009 presidential elections, Rafsanjani had called for openness and tolerance.

Rafsanjani offered several solutions to resolve the crisis. Among his suggestions, Rafsanjani said that room should be created for everyone to express themselves freely and for different groups to discuss issues without fighting each other. He said the media shouldn't face "limitations," and called for a "free atmosphere" in which critics can express themselves.

He also called for the release of all of those jailed during the postelection crackdown.

Rafsanjani also said in his sermon that there should be sympathy with those mourning the dead, and for those who suffered from the events, and that the ruling system should "reconcile" with them.
