Los Angeles, CA - Morono Kiang Gallery in Los Angeles and Aaran gallery in Tehran are pleased to announce their collaboration to present My Super Hero, an exhibition of new works by Iranian contemporary artists.  My Super Hero will open simultaneously in Tehran and Los Angeles on Saturday, March 5, 2011.

This unprecedented exhibit will be presented by two leading galleries in their respective cities.  My Super Hero consists of new works created exclusively for this exhibit by a diverse group of over 30 artists from Iran, including Newsha Tavakolian, Barbad Golshiri, Amitis Motevalli, Siamak Filizadeh, Nazanin Pouyandeh, Farsad Labbauf, Sahand Hesamyan, Ala Ebtekar, Jinoos Taghizadeh, and Abbas Kowsari.

My Super Hero is curated by Nazila Noebashari, founder and director of Aaran Gallery in Tehran, who has played a major role in nurturing and introducing the works of many Iranian contemporary artists both inside and outside of Iran. The origins of the idea behind My Super Hero, as Noebashari states, is that

"...For centuries Persian artists have used mythology and poetry to depict a wondrous world, loyal to ideals of beauty, truth and perfection.  A world where they have found the redeeming answer to brutality, chaos and frustration that have been a part of daily life.  Artists have created sanctuaries, providing consolation, delight and revelation for their audiences.  They have preserved the Persian legacy, enriched our lives and inspired us as a nation to become better than we are."

What makes this exhibit even more relevant is that, just as in Iran, many countries in the "Middle East" are in turmoil as their citizens are no longer willing to accept the status quo.  As these populations struggle to bring a new world into being, they are looking for possible alternatives of leadership in an impossible void-one that can only be filled by a hero who is "supposed to spring to life in the face of danger and adversity and display courage and the will for self sacrifice." This March the artists offer their interpretations of who these heroes might be in My Super Hero.
