Farhang Foundation's First Ever Nowruz (Iranian New Year) Celebration in Orange County

Festivities to take place at Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Saturday, March 12th

LOS ANGELES, CA, February 16, 2011 - Farhang Foundation announced today that, for the first time since its inception in 2008, it will host a Nowruz (Iranian New Year) celebration on Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 1pm to 4pm in Orange County at Samueli Theater at Segerstrom Center for the Arts (previously called the Orange County Performing Arts Center), located at 615 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626.

"We are doubly thrilled by this announcement," said Bita Milanian, Executive Director of Farhang Foundation. "Not only do we have the distinct pleasure of organizing a joyful celebration in honor of Nowruz, but we will be doing so in the beautiful and vibrant Orange County community. We hope this Nowruz festivity will be the first of many in the region."

The program, which will be free and open to the public, will include a Haft Sīn display (a symbolic centerpiece of Nowruz), saaz and dohol performers, traditionally-dressed dancers, and the premiere screening of The Persian Rite of Spring by acclaimed writer, theater artist, and award-winning translator, Niloufar Talebi who will be there in person to present the film, meet with guests, and sign the DVDs of the film.

The Persian Rite of Spring, which was commissioned by Farhang Foundation and premiered at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in March 2010, brings to life the mythology, poetry, music, and folklore of Nowruz, observed by millions, including Iranians, around the world. The birth of light and its victory over dark is celebrated by ceremonies, from Yalda (Winter Solstice) through 13-Bedar (Outdoor-13), that usher in the renewal of the world each spring.

The screening of The Persian Rite of Spring begins promptly at 2:30pm inside the Samueli Theater and FREE tickets will be available at the door starting at 1pm. Please note that seating for the screening is limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Farhang Foundation, a non-religious, non-political, and not-for-profit organization, is committed to serving not only the Los Angeles region, but all of Southern California, with its high-quality programming in support of Iranian art, culture, and heritage. While this will be its first Nowruz program in the region, Farhang Foundation has partnered in the past with Orange County-based institutions, such as UC Irvine, in support of academic conferences and film screenings.
