In a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Ezatollah Zarghami cited measures enforced as broadcast guidelines by satellite channels as an unequivocal violation of Global Information Society standards.

The Declaration of Principles adopted in Geneva in 2003 at the World Summit on the Information Society has not been properly observed, Zarghami's letter states.

According to the communication, The Geneva 2003 Declaration of Principles reiterates the importance of morality, comprehensive support for family, respect for cultural diversity and moral dimensions of the information society, and taking pre-emptive measures in the face of violent and immoral films.

"Unfortunately years after the ratification of the Geneva Declaration, the principles outlined not only have not been implemented in international interactions, but have indeed been violated in various instances," Zarghami reiterated.

The Head of the IRIB also censured the broadcasting of indecent and unethical programs by 90 satellite channels into Iran that encourage violent acts and air interviews with terrorist leaders among other inappropriate items that threaten the foundations of the family.

Moreover, Zarghami's letter underlines recent measures by Nile-Sat and Hotbird satellites to take Iranian channels such as al-Alam and Sahar off the air, describing the sudden actions as contrary to international regulations regarding free access to the information technology infrastructures.

The senior Iranian official urged the UN chief to adopt vigorous and effective measures to outlaw discrimination on the access to information technology and prevent violations of moral values.
