MALE, Maldives, July 29 (Mehr News Agency) -- The Asian heavyweight Iran edged past the Maldives on Thursday and qualified for the third round of Asian qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. In the match held at the Rasmee Dhandu National Stadium, the Iranian outfit beat 1-0 the Maldives.

Midfielder Mohammad-Reza Khalatbari scored Iran's only goal just seconds before the interval.
Iran had defeated the Maldives 4-0 in the first leg and qualified for the third round on 5-0 aggregate.
The two teams met for the first time in the 1998 World Cup qualifiers, in a game in which the Iranian team had its most lopsided victory when they crushed the Maldives 17-0.
