Photo: Burial of Haleh Sahabi
There are times in one's life that, despite all your preparation for not being shocked about a person or a group, they do something that simply make you just say 'My God, How can they!?'
This past Wednesday was such a day. I could not believe what came through on emails and the news websites. We have seen a lot of bad things being done by bad governments, governments that have gone astray and are led by mobs who have no second thoughts for God or goodness, let alone justice and law!
The death of Haleh Sahabi happened on Wednesday, even before her father's funeral started, by the actions of those who had come to keep order!! A middle-aged humble, kind, religious and gentle lady. What is happening in Iran? How can the authorities, who themselves must have mothers, sisters and daughters, ignore this brutal act. Are they going down the road of North Korea? Yet those who do these unspeakable acts are Iranians too. Are we following the path of the Khmer Rouge? We are Iranian; most of us believe in something. How can this happen??
There is nothing that anyone can do to bring Haleh back. But I hope and pray that this unbelievable tragedy makes many people stop to think, especially those with power. We all know that power corrupts and the fight is over power because of the many gains that it brings including money and position. But how can any of those in power, who could have stopped this unbearable act, truly and honestly bring those responsible to justice? Not for our sake, but for the sake of their souls, if there is any feeling left in them?
I had the honor of meeting Haleh a couple of times and went to her modest house once. She was and will remain for many like me one of the truest features of peace and devotion to democracy, with grace, patience and love for one's homeland and its people. When will those in power be wise enough to see that she and those like her are an asset to the country and not a liability? When will they be human enough and strong enough to stop being afraid of anyone who does not play along with their tune of backwardness and fascism? When will they stop these atrocities, persecution and killing of innocent citizens, in front of so many in broad daylight? And it does not matter in whose name these are committed? These are simply violent acts of fear, despotism and tyranny. You in power, no matter how you got there, these acts are bad and wrong; this does not belong to the 21st century. Wake up to reality a little before everything goes to pieces and we become another Libya.
Please join me in sending your heartfelt sympathies to the Sahabi family and pray for Haleh and her father's soul, and pray that wherever they are now. They now have peace, and they comfort each other; and I hope this may be just a little comfort to those dearest and nearest to them that they left behind.
