Tehran's Persepolis team won Iran's Hazfi Cup on Friday despite a 1-0 loss to Bandar Anzali's team Malavan . Persepolis had defeated the Anzali-based team 4-2 in the first leg and claimed the title 4-3 on aggregate.
After the game, the supporters of Malavan, who weren't happy with the results and blamed the Iranian Football Federation for favoring Persepolis, rioted in protest. They ripped many of the seats in the stadium and threw them in the field, and they attacked Persepolis supporters.
Some of the crowd also poured into the field where the security forces confronted them with tear gas. A number of people were injured during this raucous event. According to unconfirmed reports, two people may have also died.
Bandar Anzali, known as Bandar-e Pahlavi before the Iranian Revolution, is a harbour town on the Caspian Sea, in the Iranian province of Gilan, close to Rasht. Bandar-e Anzali has a population of approximately 150,000.
