Illustrator Rashin Kheirieh is displaying her own impressions of cats in an exhibition of paintings and video art entitled "Cat-Me" at Tehran's Vaali Gallery featuring the peaceful coexistence of cats and women.
"I have never wanted to keep a cat but have always been interested in cats' behavior. I think the character, behavior and thoughts of a cat are quite feminine," Kheirieh said in a press release on Friday.
"I guess cats are very intelligent and are well aware of what's going on around them. I see many similarities between myself and the cat and think the character of a cat is quite close to my personal character," she added.
Females enjoy a special position in her collection of cats and men are depicted in the shadows as if they were secrets hidden in women's minds.
The figures of women and cats are of more significance in these paintings and men are featured in the background, the report adds.
Cigarettes, one of the highlights in the artwork, are situated either in the hands of the female figures or on the lips of the males in shadow.
"A cigarette is something forbidden in my mind and what a visitor observes in my works actually shows my hatred of cigarettes and not my interest. In the world there have always been limits and I have depicted this limit this way. I meant to depict life with all its beauties and ugliness," she added.
"What I actually meant was to portray life with its moments of happiness and sadness," she said.
She also explains that her one-minute video art is actually parts of the same paintings on display but in mobile form. "I have selected parts of the paintings which were movable in my mind and have made a short narrative video out of them."
Comprised of mostly three colors of black, white and red, the paintings are not complicated rather they are simple and help to narrate the daily feelings of an artist.
Kheirieh is a graduate of graphic design and so far has held several exhibits in Iran, the United States, and France.
The exhibit runs until June 28 at the gallery located at 72 Khoddami St. off Vanak Square.
