Statement by MP Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs on the detention of Iran's opposition leaders
Security forces have moved Iranian opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi (L) and Mehdi Karroubi, along and their wives, from their houses to an undisclosed location
MP Deepak Obhrai, the Parliamentary Secretary to Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs made the following statement on March 1st, 2011 in Canada's Parliament on the detention of Iran's opposition leaders by the Ahmadinejad regime.
Mr. Deepak Obhrai (Calgary East, CPC): Mr. Speaker, Our government is deeply concerned at reports of the detention of the two Iranian opposition leaders, Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi.
The two leaders had been under house arrest since February 14, 2011, when they had called for a peaceful protest in support of the events in Egypt. Now we hear that these two leaders are imprisoned by the Iranian authorities.
It is the height of hypocrisy for the Iranian regime to provide its support to protests in Egypt and Libya but then to violently suppress and ruthlessly intimidate similar protests in its own country.
We, along with the rest of the international community, are closely monitoring events in Tehran as opposition leaders call for peaceful protest every Tuesday this month.
Our government calls upon the Iranian government to immediately respect the rights of its citizens and allow for these peaceful protests to take place.
