Iran calls for Bahrain to stop use of violence

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi called for Bahraini government to avoid violence against its people. Regarding the violence taken place in Bahrain on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister urged Bahraini government to cease violence against its people and stop resorting to the use of force.

"It is expected from Bahraini government to tactfully deal with demonstrators' demands and respect their rights to pursue their demands which can be realized through peaceful means," Salehi said on Sunday.

In the clashes between protesters and pro-government security forces on Sunday, hundreds of people were injured.

The clashes began early Sunday after demonstrators set up barricades across a main road into downtown Manama and turned away motorists headed for work.

Dozens of policemen in riot gear forced the protesters back in a series of clashes over two hours.

Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of anti-government demonstrators blocking access to the financial district of Bahrain's capital on Sunday, as sectarian tension escalated in this tiny island kingdom.
