A member of the clergy has finally been allowed to visit opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi and his wife, more than three weeks into their house arrest, according to the couple's son.

Mohammad Taghi Karroubi says on his website that a "member of the clergy who is trusted by his family and the authorities as well" visited Mehdi Karroubi and Fatemeh Karroubi two nights ago and reported that they are in "complete health and peace."

While refraining from identifying the cleric, Mohammad Taghi Karroubi described the development as a positive move by the authorities and expressed optimism that his family will soon be able to visit his parents.

The Islamic Republic has put two Iranian opposition leaders Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi and their respective wives under house arrest since they called for a rally in support of the recent Arab uprisings.

The two leaders have been completely cut off from the outside world and denied any visits, even from their children.

After weeks of a complete news blackout, the daughters of Mir Hossein Mousavi finally reported last week that they were allowed to briefly visit their parents, who are reportedly being kept in a building near their own home.

Islamic Republic authorities have announced that the two opposition leaders will no longer be allowed to make any public announcements.
