During a ceremony outside the city theatre in Tehran, huge dolls of Amoo Norouz and Naneh Sarma were unveiled. The colorful and cheerful dolls promptly got engaged in entertaining the spectators.
Amoo Norouz is the "Uncle" of Norouz, the Persian New Year. Amoo Norouz ushers in the spring time every year according to Persian tradition. On the eve of spring equinox, when the Persian New Year is celebrated, Amoo Norouz brings children gifts, much like his Western counterpart Santa Claus. Another mythical character is Naneh Sarma, sometimes called Lady of the Cold Spells, or Grandma Frost. Amoo Norouz is a sympbol happiness and a new start while Naneh Sarma signifies the passing of winter.
