Living legend of the Iranian traditional music Mohammadreza Shajarian has asked musicians to publicize the new instruments he has created over the past few years.

Vocalist Mohammadreza Shajarian describes the details of his new instruments

Speaking during the opening ceremony of an exhibition displaying a collection of his new stringed instruments at the Iranian Artists Forum (IAF) on Sunday, he said, "It is a musician who should introduce the new instruments and not an instrument maker."

"The musicians should bring the new instruments into public awareness through their solo and orchestral performances, which would demonstrate the capabilities of the instruments," he added.

"Undoubtedly, this job will take decades," Shajarian noted.

Vocalist and calligrapher Shajarian emerged as a prominent instrument maker in 2008 when he unveiled the shahrashub, sorahi, saghar, sabu, kereshmeh, bamsaz, tondar, and several other new instruments he had created in his personal workshop.

He debuted his two newest instruments, which he calls the arghanun (organum) and the barbad (the name of a renowned musician during the reign of the Sassanid king Khosrow II), at the IAF exhibition.

Ten santur made in various sizes are on display at the exhibit.

Shajarian has used his new instruments during his concerts over the past few years.

"We use the new instruments along with other instruments in during the performances. We should use these instruments beside the others in order to institutionalize them in ensembles," Shajarian said.

"My whole life is sound," noted Shajarian and added that he has felt the need for new sounds in Iranian music over his professional career.

Mohammadreza Darvishi, Homayun Khorram, Keykhosro Purnazeri, Hushang Kamkar, Mohammad Sarir, Dariush Pirniakan and several other musicians attended the opening ceremony of the show, which runs until May 13.

In addition, painter Gholamhossein Nami, calligrapher Gholamhossein Amirkhani, graphic designer Ebrahim Haqiqi and a number of cineastes were in attendance at the ceremony.

"Your Sound", a music video featuring Shajarian's new instruments, was screened for visitors. Composed by Majid Derakhashni, the music was performed by members of Shahnaz, an ensemble which has accompanied Shajarian during his concerts over the past few years.
