Iran Receives Nuclear Fuel From Russia

Source: ISNA

Iran received the second fuel shipment from Russia for its Bushehr nuclear power plant.

The fuel batch weighs 30 tons was delivered through three flights respectively on May 4, 8 and 11, said the Spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Hamid Khadem Qaemi on Wednesday.

"The consignment has passed all legal steps and safety checks to arrive in Iran and has been transferred to its pre-determined location," he said.

"The new batch of fuel is to be used in the second year of Bushehr nuclear plant's activity and it would replace the current fuel one year after the launch of the nuclear facility," he added.

Russia had already delivered 90 tons of nuclear fuel (82 metric tons) in eight shipments in 2007 and 2008, sufficient for one-year consumption in Bushehr's 1,000 megawatt light-water reactor.

The nuclear official said, "the delay in the power plant's operation is due to some safety checks for the probable damage of the fuel. The whole fuel had been checked but no problem was seen."

He said the nuclear settlement would join the national grid soon.

Tehran has been under four rounds on U.N. sanctions over its refusal to halt peaceful uranium enrichment.

The West accuses Iran of making nuclear weapons. Tehran denies the allegation saying that its nuclear work only aims to meet domestic needs including power generation and medical needs.
