The Syrian Embassy in Washington said on May 11 that the Iranian-born Parvaz was put on a Caspian Airlines flight to Tehran on May 1, escorted by the Iranian consul in Damascus.

It said Parvaz, 39, was turned over to Iran because she was carrying an expired Iranian passport when she arrived in Damascus on April 29, giving "tourism" as her reason for travel.

Parvaz, who holds U.S., Canadian, and Iranian passports, has been missing since she left Al-Jazeera's headquarters in Doha, Qatar, on April 29.

On May 4, Al-Jazeera said the Syrian authorities confirmed she had been detained.

Parvaz used her Iranian passport to enter Syria because she couldn't enter with either of the others.
