Publishers racked up about 1,750 billion rials (about $150 million) in sales in Tehran International Book Fair this year, up from 1,400 billion rials (about $119million) last year, announced the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance on Tuesday.
This significant growth indicates that the fair had a substantial increase in visitors this year, Mohammad Hosseini told the Persian service of Mehr News Agency.
"It also shows that people who came to visit the fair were not just visiting the pavilions, they also purchased books," he added.
Despite all the deficiencies and problems, the fair was a successful event, he said. Tehran's Imam Khomeini Mosalla hosted the 24th Tehran International Book Fair from May 4 to 14.
Deputy Director of the fair Hamid Qobadi also confirmed that book sales were higher than in previous years.
Over 2300 Iranian and 1700 foreign publishers took part in the event. The foreign publishers came from 67 countries.
