Iranian champion Sepahan has pummeled Bunyodkor of Uzbekistan to reach the quarterfinals of the 2011 AFC Champions League. The Isfahan-based club downed the Uzbek side 3-1 in its own turf on Tuesday to book a place in the Asian Champions League quarters.
Sepahan midfielder Fabio Januario opened the net for Iran's Premier League champion in the 27th minute through a long-range blast.
Five minutes later, Ibrahima Toure made it 2-0 for Sepahan when the striker ran past a defender before lobbing the ball in from a closed angle.
Seven minutes into the second half, Toure was dismissed after a clash with Uzbek players and left Sepahan's defense stretched enough for the Uzbeks to reduce the deficit.
Slavoljub Djordjevic pulled one back for Bunyodkor through a header on a corner kick in the 56th minute of the match.
Amir Qalenoei's side restored the two-goal lead in the 68th minute when Hadi Aqili stepped up to score from the penalty spot to seal the victory for Sepahan.
In other matches of the day, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors of South Korea blanked Tianjin Teda of China 3-0, Gamba Osaka of Japan edged past its compatriot Cerezo Osaka 1-0, and Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia defeated the other Saudi side Al-Hilal 3-1.
The quarterfinals of the Asian Champions League are scheduled to be held in September. The first legs will be played on September 14, and the second legs will be held on September 27 and 28.
