The Next Sheriff in Town: Ross Mirkarimi leads in the race for San Francisco Sheriff

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi remained the clear front-runner Wednesday evening in the race to be the next San Francisco sheriff, although his two main contenders remained mathematically alive, with some votes left uncounted.

Figures from the Department of Elections, updated on November 8, show Mirkarimi capturing 52.77 percent of the votes with Chris Cunnie trailing at 47.23%. There are still 32,000 write-in and provisional ballots still left to be tallied. But it is unlikely that Mirkarimi will lose his lead.

About Ross Mirkarimi: Mirkarimi was born in Chicago to an Iranian father and a mother of Russian descent. He received his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from St. Louis University, a Master's degree in International Economics from Golden Gate University, and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science from the University of San Francisco. Mirkarimi attended the Monterey Institute for Russian language certification. He is also a graduate of the San Francisco Police Academy, where he served as class president; and trained by the US EPA at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, CA, for advance environmental crime forensics.

Mirkarimi was elected San Francisco District 5 Supervisor in 2004, and re-elected in 2008 with 77 percent of the vote. He has authored over 80 ordinances that have had both citywide and national impact. Apart from his reputation for sponsoring cutting-edge laws, Mirkarimi is also well known for his 24/7 focus on issues that chronically challenge his district and the City.

The other Iranian-American, Sharmin Bock, who was running for the Distric Attorney's post also had a good showing. Bock came 3rd in the first and second rounds with 20.74% and 25.3% of the votes respectively. She was however eliminated in round 3.
