Iran defeated European champion Serbia in a five-set thriller (25-17, 18-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-11) on the third day of first-round action in the 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup.

The victory gave Iran a 2-1 mark in the competitions, while Serbia slumped to 0-3. Iran defeated host Japan 3-2 in its opening and lost to Cuba 3-0.

Mehdi Bazargard bagged 17 points for Iran and Ivan Miljkovic was the focal point for Serbia, scoring a match-high 22 points.

"We are very happy with this victory. Not only because we beat the European champions, but because they were one of the teams I showed to my team this summer as a model," Iran coach Julio Velasco said in the post match news conference.

"Serbia didn't play its best. I told the players if we have a chance in this match, we have to take it", he added.

Iran's Pourya Fayazi was named the most impressive player of the match.

Iran is scheduled to play Poland on Thursday in the event's second round.

Iran's last participation in the FIVB World Cup was in 1991 where they finished 11th overall.

The event's top three teams will earn berths in the 2012 Olympics.
