Iran finishes 2nd in West Asian women's football tourney

ABU DHABI, Oct. 14 (Mehr News Agency) -- Iran lost to the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday night in the final of the 4th West Asian Women's Football Championship.

Iran drew 2-2 with the UAE in normal time but lost to the hosts 6-5 during the penalty shootout at Abu Dhabi's Sultan bin Zayed Stadium. Iran was reduced to ten players in the 85th minute when the referee sent off Vahideh Isari and awarded the UAE a penalty kick.

Fatemeh Arjangi and Maryam Rahimi scored for Iran and Dalila Zerrouki and Oumayma Maaouia scored for the UAE.

"This is a great victory and I am very pleased with the way my players played. They have shown a great spirit during the entire tournament and did well to recover from the matches," the UAE coach Hassan Ajenoui said.

Ajenoui added, "We have played five matches in 10 days in hot and humid conditions so this victory means a lot to us because it is also our second straight title."

Iran had already defeated the UAE 4-1 in the group stage.

"Iran deserved to win the title but things went against us and we lost. Incredibly, our players missed their chances in the final match," Iran coach Maryam Irandoost said.
