The head of Kabul police investigations said the explosion occurred at Rabbani's home on Tuesday night.

Another peace council official, Mohammad Massoum Estankezi, was seriously injured in the suicide-bomber attack.

Rabbani's home is in a heavily guarded district of Kabul, where most embassies and international institutions are located.

Rabbani was a theology graduate of Kabul University as well as Egypt's Al-Azhar University, where he became closely involved with the Muslim Brotherhood.

He returned to Kabul and became the president of Afghanistan from 1992 to 1996, after the fall of the communist regime.

He supported the Karzai government in recent years and worked with the Supreme Council of Peace to establish grounds for reconciliation with the Taliban and other insurgent groups.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack on Rabbani.
