WUHAN, China, Sept. 21 (Mehr News Agency) -- Iran overcame South Korea in the 26th FIBA Asia Championship on Wednesday. Twice defending champion earned the sixth straight victory, beating pesky South Korea 79-62 at the Whuan Sports Center.
The win pushed Iran to top of the standings in Group E and a quarterfinal clash against fellow Jordan.
Memphis Grizzlies center Hamed Haddadi was Iran's best scorer, netting 17 points.
Samad Nikkhah Bahrami was carried off the field with a right ankle injury.
Iran coach Veselin Matic is not worried about his player.
"In Tianjin (where Iran retained their gold medal beating China in the final), also, Kamrany and Samad were not too healthy initially. But we hired Chinese doctor who came up with a magic cure," he said amidst a laughing media group.
The champions will directly qualify for next year's London Olympics while the runners-up and bronze medalist have to compete in the Olympic qualifying tournament in July, 2012.
