Tehran is hosting the 20th Persian handmade carpet exhibition. From elegant Persian rugs to stylish wall carpets; Over 450 Iranian handmade carpet producers have taken part in this week-long exhibition.
Carpet-weaving is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished manifestations of Persian culture and art, which dates back to ancient Persia.
There is an estimated population of 1.2 million weavers in Iran, producing carpets for domestic markets and international export.
Iran exports carpets to more than 100 countries, as hand-woven rugs are one of its main non-oil export items. In the past Iranian year, Iran exported 556 million dollars worth of handmade carpets.
Iran produces about five million square meters of carpets annually-80 percent of which are sold in international markets. Iran's handmade carpet exhibition attracts hundreds of carpet lovers and dealers from around the world every year.
Although in the past couple of years Persian carpets have come under fierce competition from other countries, producing reproductions of the original Iranian designs as well as cheaper substitutes, the quality of Persian carpets can be easily distinguished.
