The Defenders of Human Rights Centre (DHRC) website reports that in a statement issued on Wednesday, the laureates decried the "unfair" sentence handed to Mohammadi, the deputy head of the DHRC and head of Iran's National Peace Council.

Mohammadi was summoned on Saturday April 21 to serve out her six-year sentence for the charge of "acting against national security, membership in the DHRC and propaganda against the regime."

The statement notes Mohammadi's history of physical ailments and calls for her "immediate and unconditional release." Mohammadi was arrested in June of 2010, during which time she suffered from periodic paralytic seizures.

She was sentenced to 11 years in prison in the preliminary court and her sentence was later reduced to six years in the appeals court.

Shirin Ebadi (Iran), Mikhail Gorbachev (Russia), Dalai Lama (Tibet), Mairead Maguire (Ireland), Rigoberto Menchú Tum (Guatemala), Judy Williams (USA), Lech Walesa (Poland), Mohammad Yunus (Bangladesh), the International Peace Organization (Switzerland), and the Albert Schweitzer Institute (USA) are the signatories of the statement of support for Nargess Mohammadi.
