Tehran Police have begun a new round of patrolling against "inappropriate attire" in public, the head of the force announced. The Mehr News Agency quoted Brigadier General Hossein Sajedinia saying: "Confronting bad forms of dressing will be carried out in two parts: producers and importers on one hand and consumers on the other."

He maintained that that there has been public demand for the police to confront bad forms of public dress, and "distasteful" mannequins will be collected from stores.

He said that all production and distribution centres for these kinds of clothes will be identified and warned. If the warnings are not heeded, the centres will be shut down, Sajedinia stressed.

The head of Tehran Police added: "The other stage of this initiative consists of deploying permanent moral patrol vehicles in public squares, commercial centres and streets as well as motorbike patrols on Tehran highways."

Every year with the arrival of spring and summer, citizens come under more scrutiny by security forces over their choice of clothing.

Iranians are expected to dress modestly and women are expected to cover their hair and obscure their body lines in public.
