Contour Crafting (CC) is a layered fabrication technology developed by Dr. Behrokh Khoshnevis of the University of Southern California. Contour Crafting technology has great potential for automating the construction of whole structures as well as sub-components. Using this process, a single house or a colony of houses, each with possibly a different design, may be automatically constructed in a single run, embedded in each house all the conduits for electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning.
Our research also addresses the application of Contour Crafting in building habitats on other planets. Contour Crafting will most probably be one of the very few feasible approaches for building structures on other planets, such as the Moon and Mars, which are being targeted for human colonization before the end of the new century.

Behrokh Khoshnevis is a professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering and Civil & Environmental Engineering, and is the Director of the Center for Rapid Automated Fabrication Technologies (CRAFT) and Director of Manufacturing EngineeringGraduate Program at USC. He is active in CAD/CAM, robotics and mechatronics related research projects that include the development of novel Solid Free Form, or Rapid Prototyping, processes (Contour Crafting and SIS), automated construction of civil structures, development of mechatronics systems for biomedical applications (e.g., restorative dentistry, rehabilitation engineering, haptics devices for medical applications), and autonomous mobile and modular robots for assembly applications on earth and in space. He routinely conducts lectures and seminars on invention and technology development. He is a Fellow member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers , a Fellow member of the Society for Computer Simulation, and a Senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineering. His inventions have received extensive worldwide publicity in acclaimed international media and have been the subjects of numerous radio and television programs. The automated construction invention, Contour Crafting , was selected in 2006 as one of top 25 best inventions from more than 4000 candidate inventions by the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the History Channel's Modern Marvels program.
Dr. Behrokh Khoshnevis Awarded by NASA for Construction on the Moon Using Contour Crafting - Dr. Khoshnevis' proposed project concerns the use of his robotic construction technology, Contour Crafting, for building structures on the moon. This is Dr. Khoshnevis' second NASA grant on the subject. In the proposed project economically viable and reliable building systems and tool sets are being sought, examined and tested for extraterrestrial habitat and infrastructure buildup. - Association of Professors and Scholars of Iranian Heritage (APSIH)
