The disadvantaged workers of Tabas coal mine work at a depth of 300 meters in two shifts of 6 hours per day. These miners are hired on a contract basis and are paid 400 thousand tomans (about $200) per month, the minimum salary required to get by. This is while coal mining is considered a dangerous job. The workers are exposed to lethal gases, coal dust and other dust suspended in the air which can severely impact their health in the long term.

Tabas is a city in and capital of Tabas County, Yazd Province, Iran. Tabas is located in central Iran, 950 kilometers southeast of Tehran. At the 2006 census, its population was 30,681, in 7,962 families.
