Political plan afoot to wrest control from Ahmadinejad

Iran's state newspaper claims that two former ministers from the Ahmadinejad administration have written to "a high-ranking official of the system" to create a committee to "take control of the executive administration of the country for the next year."

The Monday issue of the Iran daily claims that former foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki and former interior minister Mostafa PourMohammadi have written this letter.

The term used to refer to a "high-ranking official" is the same one Iranian media usually used to indicate the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.

The Iran daily writes: "In view of the country's sensitive and critical situation, a committee comprised of the heads of the three branches of the government and other experts should take over the administrative decision-making for the next year."

The report indicates that three weeks ago, Iranian media reported that nine Members of Parliament had also called for a committee representing various government institutions to take over the economic administration of the country.

Since Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has one year left in his mandate as president, the two suggestions for the "next year" appears to highlight the administrative shortcomings of Ahmadinejad's government.

Intensified sanctions on Iran by the EU and the United States over the ongoing nuclear disputes appear to have had an effect on the Iranian economy, reflected in soaring prices and a flagging currency.
