State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a press conference on Thursday: "I think our expectation would be that if he goes at this time, that he will use the visit to make the point about our broad concern as an international community and the UN's concern about the number of aspects of their UN obligations that Iran is flouting."
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit will take place in Tehran from August 26 to August 31, and so far UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has not confirmed if he will attend the gathering of 138 countries.
Iranian media report that Ban Ki-Moon will be at the summit, which Iranian authorities are holding under strict security measures.
Government offices, schools, universities and banks will be closed for five days, and Mehrabad Airport will also be closed to all general flights in order to exclusively receive the summit guests.
