Iran Earthquake Appeal by Popli Khalatbari Charitable Foundation

Appeal by Popli Khalatbari Charitable Foundation (PKCF)

The two earthquakes that struck East Azerbaijan province in northwest Iran on 11 August 2012 destroyed over 130 villages, leaving hundreds of people dead and hundreds of thousands homeless.

The Trustees of the Popli Khalatbari Charitable Foundation have set up the East Azerbaijan Earthquake Appeal Fund and donated £50,000 towards rebuilding projects in the affected villages which will begin after a thorough study of the region's needs has been completed.

From the experience gained in the aftermath of the 2003 Bam earthquake we feel that charities like ours should concentrate their efforts on helping to rebuild the lives of the people rather than focusing on sending emergency aid following the initial devastation.

Our CEO and one other Foundation member, along with our Iranian sister charity Nikan, are currently in Iran and are receiving reports from expert teams who have visited the stricken areas. Relief aid from individuals and others has already been coordinated by the emergency organizations and there are sufficient supplies of medicine, food, clothing and blankets. Our aim is to provide for the long term needs of the people, especially the children, and to ensure that our funds will be used in the most effective manner.

Since the US has lifted the sanctions on charitable donations for a hundred days, our American supporters can make contributions through the American Fund for Charities (AFC). PKCF is eligible to receive grants from AFC, who are registered by the IRS as a charitable organization, as noted in section 501 (c) (3), and a public charity, described in Sections 170 (b) (1) (a) (vi) and 509 (a) (1). Donors may claim the maximum tax benefits allowed by law for their contributions.

Please make cheques payable to American Fund for Charities and send it to PKCF at the address below and complete the AFC form attached.
