No breakthrough in Iran-IAEA talks

The latest round of talks between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran ended yesterday, August 24, with no concrete results.

Herman Nackaerts, the Deputy Director General and head of the Department of Safeguards at the IAEA, reported that fundamental differences remain between Iran and the agency.

Reuters reported that Nackaerts said no plans have been made for another round of talks.

IRNA, the Iranian state media, reported, however, that Iran's envoy to the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, has said that some issues were resolved at Friday's meeting. IRNA quotes Soltanieh saying that major differences still remain and, therefore, talks will have to continue.

The IAEA has been seeking access to Parchin Military Base near Tehran. Iran says, however, that Parchin is a military base and not a part of its nuclear program.
