NAM foreign ministers start second day of Tehran meeting

The second day of Non-Aligned Movement foreign ministers meeting commenced in Tehran Wednesday.

The foreign ministers' gathering was inaugurated on Tuesday, 28 August after the Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy submitted the presidency of the meeting to Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

The ministerial meeting follows a two-day expert meeting of the NAM held on August 26-27.

The draft statement of the 16th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran was approved by consensus at the first day of the Foreign Ministers meeting.

The 16th summit of NAM leaders will take place 30-31 August.

Ahmadinejad permits NAM participants to visit nuclear facilities

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says Iran's President has permitted NAM participants to pay a visit to Natanz nuclear facilities.

Iran has given different options to the guests of the NAM summit including a visit to important cities of the countries, industrial, scientific and research centers such as the Atomic Energy Organization, he said.

"President has permitted the participants to visit Iran's nuclear sites and they can do it if they are interested," he added.

Also concerning whether the UN Secretary General will visit the country's nuclear facilities, he noted, "I don't know whether he is going to visit the nuclear sites or not but he can do that if he wishes to."

Ban: Iran able to play important role in regional issues

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says Iran is able to take an important role in settlement of regional issues.

"Iran is able to play an important part in settlement of regional conflicts as a mediator," he said Wednesday upon his arrival to Iran for the NAM summit.

He also hoped he would hold constructive talks with senior Iranian officials.
