Source: Radio Zamaneh

Iran has launched a video-sharing website called Mehr, referring to it as "the Iranian YouTube." The Iran Central News Agency reported: "From now on the public can make small packages of their favourite films that might be difficult to access."

He urged the public to post "short films of mourning ceremonies of Tasoa and Ashura on the Iranian YouTube for all who are interested all across the world."

The website says its goal is to attract Persian-speaking users and promote Iranian culture.

At the time this report was prepared, 1,642 videos, 987 photos and 1,824 audio files had been posted on the site.

The content of YouTube is considered inappropriate by Islamic Republic standards. Similar evaluation of the internet content in general has led Iranian authorities to work on launching a national intranet.

The so called "National Internet" is not supposed cut access to the world wide web; however, many sites, including YouTube, are blocked by Iranian authorities.
