Concerns Raised About Health Of Iranian Political Prisoner Mostafa Tajzadeh

The health of Iranian political prisoner Mostafa Tajzadeh in Evin Prison is of grave concern, a group of political prisoners' families has warned. Their statement, posted on the Kaleme website, describes Tajzadeh's situation as extremely "worrisome."

Mostafa Tajzadeh, a senior member of the Islamic Iran Participation Front, was arrested on June 13, 2009 following the widespread mass protests sparked by allegations of fraud in the presidential election. Tajzadeh was sentenced to six years in jail and a 10-year ban from political and media activities.

The statement posted on Kaleme says: "Now that Tajzadeh is serving out his sentence, he should be in ward 350 with other political prisoners, but instead he is being kept in an unknown spot, and it is not clear under which Evin Prison authority he is being forced to serve out his sentence alone."

The signatories add that it has now been about two years that Tajzadeh has been going on protest fasts, which have severely damaged his health.

The reports goes on to add that due to his high blood pressure, doctors have warned about kidney damage and have called for his hospitalization, but prison authorities have refused to heed their recommendations.

The statement expressed concern that Tajzadeh might fall victim to the same fate as that of Hoda Saber, another political prisoner, who died 10 days into a hunger strike. Hoda Saber's family claims that the delay in getting Saber to the hospital led to his death.

The Norooz website reported earlier that Tajzadeh is being held in "quarantine in solitary."
