Iran: Reports of sexual crimes on the rise

Source: Radio Zamaneh

Iranian police authorities said today that more and more victims of sexual crimes are reporting the incidents.

In a report that appeared on Monday on the Iranian police commission website, Criminal Task Force Deputy Hadi Mostafayi said that in the past nine months, a new policy encouraging victims to file charges and the deployment of female officers in order to protect the victims' identity have led to the large increase in the number of sexual assault cases reported.

Mostafayi added that 93 percent of the sexual assault cases reported to the police have led to arrests, saying: "The charges laid in this field are not limited to rape but also include moral abuse."

Last June, Mehr quoted Ahmadreza Radan, the deputy head of Iran's security forces, saying that 90 percent of reported rape cases are resolved and lead to arrests.

According to Islamic Republic laws, a person convicted of rape gets the death penalty.
