Iranian ophthalmologist Khalil Ghasemi Falavarjani managed to push out the heavy silicone oil from the sclerotomy without using any suction pump.
Ghasemi told ISNA heavy silicone oil is a new product which is increasingly used for ocular tamponade in complicated cases of retinal detachment surgery. Its removal is not as simple as traditional silicone oil removal. All previous methods for the removal were based on suction pumps.
He noted using the new technique, the perfluorocarbone (PFC) liquid is injected into the eye beneath the silicone oil and heavy silocone oil is pushed out from the sclerotomy without using any suction pump.
Ghasemi stressed, "We employed the technique successfully in several eyes for heavy silicone oil removal."
