Despite Rafsanjani's objections, Farhad Daneshjou appointed president of Iran's Islamic Azad University

Minister of Science, Research, and Technology Kamran Daneshjou signed a decree on Sunday appointing his brother Farhad Daneshjou as the president of the Islamic Azad University. Farhad Daneshjoo will now replace current chancellor Abdollah Jasbi, an ally of former president Hashemi Rafsanjani.

In a controversial meeting, held on January 11, 2012 by the newly appointed board of trustees of Azad University, Farhad Daneshjoo was elected as the president of the university after receiving 5 out of 9 votes cast by the members of the board present at the meeting. This was then approved by Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution on January 17. However, Rafsanjani as the Chairman of the board, refused to sign the decree insisting that board rules had not been followed during the voting.

Rafsanjani has been locked in a power struggle with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad since the June 2009 presidential elections.

After weeks of negotiations, Rafsanjani continued to refuse to put his seal of approval on Daneshjou's presidency. So President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad granted the authority to sign Farhad Daneshjou's decree to the Science Minister on Sunday.
