European Union governments have agreed to bring forward a
meeting of foreign ministers due to decide on an oil embargo on Iran by one week
to January 23.
An Iranian Oil Tanker
An EU statement said the decision was made to avoid a clash
with a summit of EU leaders set for January 30, when the meeting was originally
scheduled to take place.
EU states have already agreed in principle to an embargo on Iranian oil as part
of a Western push to step up pressure on Tehran over its nuclear program.
The announcement comes after the United Nations International Atomic Energy
Agency on January 9 confirmed that Iran is now enriching uranium to 20 percent
at the Fordow facility, some 150 kilometers southwest of Tehran.
