TEHRAN -- Organizers of the 14th Tehran International Puppet Theater Festival (Mobarak) announced winners during a ceremony in the courtyard of Golestan Palace Museum in Tehran last Thursday evening.

With no order of priority, "The First Mermaid" performed by Behruz Salemi's troupe, "Arash" by Nasrin Khanjari's troupe and "Vishka, a Rare Horse" by Roqiyeh Ershadi's troupe were the three Iranian puppet plays, which were awarded at the festival, Persian news agencies reported on Friday.
Cultural departments of the embassies of Germany and Italy in Tehran were also honored for their collaboration with the organizers.
The ceremony continued with a brief speech delivered by Deputy Culture Minister for Artistic Affairs Hamid Shahabadi.
Children's puppet show veteran Hengameh Mofid, puppet show expert Iraj Mohammadi and prominent puppeteer of kheimeh shab-bazi, a kind of Iranian puppet show, Hassan Luian received lifetime achievement awards.
Tribute was also paid to the deceased puppet theater director Javad Zolfaqari. A number of foreign theater troupes were awarded honorable mentions.
Foreign troupes from Italy, Belarus, Germany, Turkey, Georgia, Afghanistan and India participated in the festival, which opened on June 30.
