Iranian foreign minister has announced that the Islamic Republic is prepared to facilitate talks between the Syrian opposition and government by hosting a meeting between the two sides in Tehran.

IRNA reports that Ali Akbar Salehi said on Sunday that the Syrian issue is highly sensitive and if the right action is not taken, it could affect the stability of the region.

Salehi told reporters that Kofi Annan's approach is "impartial and fair" with regard to Syria and that Iran is completely supportive of it.

Annan, the joint peace envoy to Syria for the United Nations and the United Arab League has tried to implement a peace plan to end the escalating violence in Syria.

The Iranian foreign minister went on to say that Iran will invite the Syrian dissidents "in a bid to prepare and facilitate the ground for talks between the Syrian opposition and the government", Fars News Agency reported.

Iran has remained supportive of the Syrian regime and has instead criticized foreign attempts to arm the opposition forces. Iran also opposes any form of military intervention by the UN or the world powers in Syrian affairs.

Kofi Annan has repeatedly said that Iran should be part of the international peace efforts for Syria.

The United States has opposed Iran's inclusion in the efforts and claims that Iran is part of the problem rather than the solution.
