Iran's Nasrin Dousti wins gold at Asian Karate Champs

Nasrin Dousti has become the first Iranian woman to win a gold medal in the Asian Karate Championships, which is underway in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The 50kg-class fighter defeated an athlete from Uzbekistan 6-1 in her first match. She knocked out her Malaysian opponent 4-1 and then beat her South Korean rival 3-0 in the semi-final round. Dousti claimed the gold medal after beating her Japanese opponent 10-3.

Fatemeh Chalaki, in the 55kg class, also won the silver medal. First, she beat a karateka from Malaysia. Chalaki then defeated her Chinese rival 5-1 and in the semifinal round beat a Vietnamese karateka. She lost to an athlete from Japan in the final game and won silver.

The 12th Asian Karatedo Federation (AKF) Junior & Cadet Championship and the 11th AKF Senior Championship kicked off in the Uzbek capital on July 16, and will wrap up on July 17.

The competitions has brought over 1000 athletes, coaches and sports officials from more than 30 nations together.
